Behavioral health conditions affect 1 in 5 Americans, and 70% of them also have a physical health condition, but less than half of those with a behavioral health condition is treated for that condition.

In terms of racial disparities, whites are more likely to receive treatment for behavioral disorders versus people of color and other minorities1.

Typically, behavioral health issues tend to be under-reported for older adults, despite the fact that men aged 65 and older are at the highest risk of suicide, and all adults aged 85 and older are in the second highest risk category2. In addition, 70% of older adults who committed suicide saw their primary care doctor within the last month3, while only 20% saw a mental health professional4

Value-based care organizations are always looking into more ways to properly identify behavioral health conditions in their patient populations to improve outcomes, such as reducing hospital readmission rates, improving medication adherence, and visiting their doctors on a regular basis.
